Pretzels With M & M's, Red Velvet Cake Balls, Sugar Cookies |
Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th! My nine year old daughter and I made some easy, yummy treats to celebrate the long weekend. The little flags are a printable from Martha Stewart's website located here. That is the only paper craft component to today's post. :-) The rest is all about the food!
The cake balls are Red Velvet cake with Cream Cheese frosting. Instructions can be found here.
The sugar cookies recipe is from a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. They are made with powdered sugar, instead of granulated, and are very good, even without icing. I didn't want to violate any copyright laws and so did a quick search and found the same recipe on the Betty Crocker website here. We usually only make sugar cookies at Christmas-time so this was a fun change for us.
To make the pretzels, we used Snyder's Mini Twist pretzels, Wilton's White Candy Melts, and plain M & M's. Layout the pretzels on a parchment covered baking sheet. Melt the candy melts in the microwave in a decorating bag or a large ziplock bag according to the package directions. Clip the tip/corner of the bag when the melts are smooth and melted. Pipe a line of melted candy around two of the pretzel sections and immediately place an M & M in each section. The candy melts will harden and act like a glue to keep the M & M's in place. It is a nice mix of sweet and salty. This is my husband's favorite treat.
Enjoy!
Beverly
